For many severe and highly uncomfortable cases we rely on Eye Movement Desensitization and Restructuring. Designed for relief of trauma, it is a singularly effective method that stops short of “re-traumatizing” an idividual, while still achieving good effect with most patients. From the early discoveries of Dr Francine Shapiro, EMDR has continued to emerge as the most reliable and least intrusive form of therapy now available for the healing of complex and violent traumatic memory. The movement of the eyes, and other forms of “bi-lateral stimulation” engage a mind/body response that brings rapid healing from complex traumas. We’ve discovered that sometimes insight gained from other therapies is not enough. Special tools are needed. Healing of complex trauma, especially childhood mistreatment including sexual abuse is the focus of much of our work.
